New York City is a Geologic Force
Our freind Geoff Manaugh over at BLDGBLOG is helping put on what looks like a great event this Thursday Sept 9th at Studio-X NYC. (Studio X is a “global network of advanced research laboratories for exploring the future of cities”) He, along with a number of other artists and writers is helping host a launch party for Geologic City.
Created by the “Friends of the Pleistocene,” - an orginization dedicated to exploring sites and moments where the human and the geologic converge - it is a field guide to New York’s geological understructure. As the authors put it “it takes you to 20 sites where you can sense the geologic pulse of New York City.”
If you go to the opening you can also get an awesome looking geological Metrocard/Bookmark. ”Tiny iron bars within the card’s magnetic strip are arranged to point up or down, storing transit data (when a card was purchased, how many rides remain etc.). The MetroCard’s iron was born of supernovae, billions of years ago.” In otherwords, it took billions of years and material travelling interstellar distances so you can take the G to Greenpoint for a beer. Try complaining about the commute now.
There are a number of other exciting projects being shown as well, including designer and cartographer Meg Studers amazing looking maps of the global road salt trade seen below. The event is at 6pm, at 180 Varick Street, Suite 1610. They want you RSVP, to studioxnyc [at] gmail [dot] com but otherwise the event is free and promises to be extremely cool. We hope to see you there!
