Barron Canyon Trail

In the relatively remote eastern edge of Algonquin Provincial Parks lies the impressive Barron Canyon. Formed by both ancient glaciers and massive amounts of water from the outflow of the long-gone Lake Aggasiz (the precursor to today’s Great Lakes), Barron Canyon is by far one of the deepest canyons in the entire province of Ontario.

Towering over 328 feet (100 meters) from top to bottom at certain points, the accompanying Barron Canyon Trail that skirts a portion of the rim is not for the faint of heart. For something a little more relaxing, the Barron River flowing through the canyon is a world-class spot for canoeing and camping.

The relative isolation of this location from the rest of Algonquin Provincial Park means that it is an excellent way to break away from the crowds.

Know Before You Go

There are no rails protecting you from falling over the edge on the 1.5 kilometer Barron Canyon Trail, so please exercise extreme caution while hiking it, especially while with pets or small children.
