When you enter the historic Cathedral Barn, it’s hard to imagine it was once filled with hay. The hay was used for feeding the Traverse City State Hospital’s dairy herd, many of which resided in the lower level of this magnificent structure.

Cathedral Barn was constructed in 1932, and was primarily a farming facility until the state hospital closed in 1989. The barn has since been restored and plays hosts to various gatherings. These range from weddings to corporate events. The barn contains a little over 3,500 square feet of event space.

Know Before You Go

Parking is available directly adjacent to the barn. Tours begin at the Botanic Gardens at Historic Barns Park visitors center, which is located just to the north. Tours of the barn and other nearby facilities are conducted throughout the week. There is a form to complete if you want to tour on a specific date and time.
