Isolatorenmuseum is a small museum with a unique collection of electric insulators, all housed in a former transformer station in the small Bavarian city of Lohr am Main. It’s the only one of its kind in Germany and one of the few that exist in the world.  The museum and its collection are owned by Lothar Vormwald, an electrician who started in 1976 with a small collection of insulators. Years later, he bought the former transformer station in Lohr and proceeded to display his insulators. Isolatorenmuseum opened on June 20, 2004.

This assemblage of insulators consists of more than 600 pieces from across the globe. The collection also ranges in size, with the smallest being the size of a thimble and the largest weighing more than 1,000 pounds (460 kilograms). One of the museum’s more impressive pieces is the enormous insulator from the Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) broadcasting mast. The massive insulator sits just outside the museum.
