Lawrence Welk, aka “Mr. Wunnerful,” was a musician, bandleader, accordionist, and host of the squarest musical variety show on television from 1955 to 1982. Welk was born in his parents’ house which was built of an earthen brick known as batsa, on a homestead outside Strasburg, North Dakota.

The house his family built on the site has been turned into a tourist attraction dedicated to the man famous for easy-listening, “champagne style” dance music. The site, officially known as the “Ludwig and Christina Welk Homestead,” was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
