Constructed in 1868, Ryhope Pumping Station supplied Sunderland with water from aquifers 150 feet underground. The pumping station remained in operation until 1967.

The structure is the last of the pumping stations designed by Thomas Hawksley. Today, the works are a museum open on Sunday afternoons and for regular steam events.
