Wind Gap Mural

If you’re driving around downtown Barnesville, Georgia, you might be surprised to cut through a side street only to see a mural with a cheerful woman representative of past times welcoming you to Wind Gap, Missouri. “Missouri?” you might wonder to yourself, “I thought I was in Georgia!”

Don’t worry, Market Street is not a wormhole transporting you from one state to another. Barnesville is one of the many small towns in Georgia used for filming locations, and the Wind Gap Mural is a leftover from HBO’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects. HBO hired Andrew Henry, an artist and Barnesville native, to create this mural and others on set in the summer of 2017.

The show left viewers wondering if the alleged Wind Gap of Missouri’s bootheel actually existed; unfortunately, the answer is no. Wind Gap, Missouri is not a real town, but the eerie fictional town full of vicious and violent women lives on in this deceptively kind mural.

The mural was purposely aged to fit the tone of the television adaptation; however, after shooting wrapped, the City of Barnesville had the mural restored to its full glory. The Wind Gap Mural will not only remain as a prime selfie spot for visitors but also as a reminder of the fictional Missouri town that Barnesville once was for a fleeting summer.
