Atlas Obscura’s Trips and Local Experiences Are Expanding
We’re teaming up with Airbnb to grow globally.
This summer, Atlas Obscura turned 10 years old. What started in 2009 as a passion project conceived around a kitchen table has grown into a global community far bigger than we could have ever imagined. About 7 million of you visit this website each month, and more than 600,000 have contributed to our compendium of wondrous places and foods.
But our mission at Atlas Obscura has always remained the same: to inspire wonder and curiosity about the incredible world we all share. Over the last few years, we’ve helped to organize over 1,000 local experiences in seven U.S. cities. We have long dreamed of being able to offer these kinds of Atlas Obscura experiences all over the world.
Today we’re tremendously excited to announce a new partnership with Airbnb that is going to help us make our dream a reality. Our vision is that wherever you live, and wherever you’re traveling, you should be able to join up with other like-minded people to share wonderful, unusual, and unique Atlas Obscura experiences.
Over the next year, we’ll grow Atlas Obscura Experiences in two ways. We’ll launch new tours, workshops, and events in new cities all over the world. We’ll also continue to host them where we always have, but much more frequently, giving you more opportunities to join us on experiences such as:
- A magic show surrounded by 50,000 books in a 100-year-old philosophy library in Los Angeles
- A kayak tour of the Western Hemisphere’s largest concentration of shipwrecks near Washington, D.C.
- A visit with expert beekeepers in a working apiary on a 4,500-square-foot organic rooftop garden in Seattle
Alongside these shorter experiences, we will expand Atlas Obscura Trips by adding new journeys such as:
- A sailing voyage to discover abandoned lighthouses, sunken ships, ancient cairns, and more along the coast of Sardinia
- A journey through Andalucía to visit historical wonders, such as a Renaissance-era library, royal shipyards, and more
- A safari alongside expert biologists and photographers to explore Namibia’s most striking landscapes and interesting wildlife
These new trips and experiences will be listed not only on Atlas Obscura, but also on Airbnb. We are beyond thrilled to be bringing the Atlas Obscura sensibility to curious people the world over! We hope you join us.
