Fleeting Wonders: A ‘Star Wars’ Church Service in Berlin
Ever wanted to take communion with Yoda, or hear the iconic Return of the Jedi theme booming out of a church organ? The Force is with you. This coming Sunday, Berlin’s Zion Church is dedicating one of their Advent services to Star Wars, featuring music, costumes, film clips, and the kind of moral lessons that apply across galaxies.

Ulrike Garve and Lucas Ludewig, two pastors in training at the Zion Church, came up with the idea after noticing a lot of church-style lessons in the original trilogy. For example, Ludewig says, “in the climactic scene of Episode VI, Luke Skywalker is tempted to the side of the evil Emperor,” but responds that he will never turn to the Dark Side.
Watching the scene, Ludewig and Garve immediately thought of Romans 12:21–“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” These and other scriptural parallels will be emphasized during the service, accompanied by illustrative clips from the films.
The service, which will be held at 10 A.M. on December 20, will also feature organ versions of Return of the Jedi songs and, in a stunning reinterpretation of “get dressed for church,” a costume contest. Fans of water-walkers and Skywalkers alike, rejoice.
