There are only six places in the U.S. outfitted with vacuum-powered garbage collection technology. Catering to a population of around 20,000, New York’s Roosevelt Island is one of them.

Using automated vacuum collection system technology known as AVAC, garbage is sucked out of homes through large pipelines at speeds of up to 60 mph. AVAC, a Swedish technology, made its first big American debut at Disney World; unfortunately, Roosevelt Island was the only other major place it caught on.
