A Wondrously Weird Photographic Journey With One of Our Top Contributors

Atlas Obscura would not be possible without the dedicated work of our community, who help us add more wondrous places to the site every day—and improve the ones we already have. A big part of this community is a dedicated group of intrepid photographers who venture to some of the most wondrous locations in the Atlas and bring back the breathtaking images that bring our collection of places to life. We want to give a few of our most dedicated photographers a chance to share some of their favorite snapshots and the stories behind the images. Gingercinnamon joined Atlas Obscura in 2018 and tops our leaderboards for places edited in Austria, and she’s added hundreds of her shots to existing place entries. 

“Since I discovered Atlas Obscura, I plan my trips around it, and I travel a lot,” she says. Gingercinnamon was born and raised in southern Italy and has lived in six countries so far. “I have visited many places featured on the Atlas and always want to visit more. I love photographing them, too,” She’s logged more than 300 places visited on the site, and has uploaded her own photographs to nearly 200. Her original images can also be found on her Instagram, where she “focuses on sharing pictures of curious and incredible places that I’ve traveled to.” Here are a few of gingercinnnamon’s favorite places she’s visited in the Atlas, each accompanied by a shot that tells a story. 

Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Grave of Caroline Walter

“I stumbled upon this enchanting grave during my visit to Freiburg in southern Germany. I didn't know the story behind the grave or who was entombed there, but it was so beautiful I had to take a picture of it. Months later—thanks to Atlas Obscura—I discovered that it was a special grave connected to a 150-year-old mystery. Caroline Walter died young from tuberculosis in 1867, and since then fresh flowers have appeared on her grave every day, though nobody knows who is bringing them.”

Pollock's Toy Museum

“I read about this toy museum in a book when I was a child, and I was immediately captured. I never forgot about it, and when I moved to London as an adult, it was one of the first places I went to visit. It's a small museum located in a 19th-century house, filled with puppets, dolls, and toys in every corner. Visiting it was a surreal experience, and it's still one of my favorite places in London.”

Tower of Eben-Ezer

“This is one of the cases in which I went way off the beaten path just to visit a place that I'd read about on Atlas Obscura. I traveled to Brussels for a weekend, and decided to make a day trip to the Tower of Eben-Ezer because it sounded like the weird kind of place that I like a lot. From Brussels, I had to take a train to Liège, then a bus to a village in the middle of nowhere, and finally walk through an empty countryside to get to this extraordinary, surreal place—probably one of Belgium's best-kept secrets. And on the way back I had to hitchhike to Liège, as the bus would not come for another two hours.”
