Biso Pokuna

In the Sri Lankan village of Galabedda lies a mysterious archaeological ruin known as Biso Pokuna, which roughly translates to “Queen’s Pond.” This stone slab pool built into the ground was once part of an ancient palace, the scant remains of which can be seen protruding from the vegetation around the structure.

The pool is the only recognizable feature of the palace that has survived the test of time, and it remains remarkably intact and a thing of architectural beauty. The steps used to enter the pool and the channels through which water flowed in out are still visible, as is a remarkably well-preserved urinal, the artistry of which suggests this used to be part of a wealthy palace.
