The Castle of Gormaz was originally constructed in 756 by an Islamic military commander in an effort to control the region. Around 200 years later, it was expanded to cover the entire plateau on which it was strategically constructed. By then, it was the largest fortress in Western Europe.
When driving toward the fortress, you’ll see it appears to expand before your eyes as your excitement builds. For a unique experience, park at the bottom of the castle and hike up the trail. Otherwise, simply walking the grounds of Gormaz Castle is incredible in its own right. The structure overall stands strong and is well preserved. Keep a keen eye out for medieval pottery, too, as the ground is covered with it.
Know Before You Go
Bring water, as this part of Spain is hot and dry. There are a few natural springs around that are great to take a swim in during the summer months.
