Tucked into a small lot in the historic village of Catskill, New York is an enormous cat made of recycled wood scraps — an excellent example of Catskills vernacular art.

The cat, aka the Catamount People’s Museum, formerly sat facing the street. When a land dispute caused the vacant lot to be split, local residents picked the cat up and swung it sideways. Tables and benches allow people to sit under and inside the cat, created by local artist Matt Bua.

Inside the cat are pictures, articles, and objects to view, as well as a guestbook for visitors to sign.

Updated November, 2016: Catamount People’s Museum has been torn down.

Know Before You Go

Free street-side parking. The cat is just west of the Uncle Sam Bridge in Catskill, NY. It's a self-serve site: there's a local history board and it's open all the time.
