Ciechocinek Salt Graduation Tower
For 200 years, people have flocked to this Polish town to experience the healing powers of salt.
In Ciechocinek, Poland, there is a monumental structure that exerts a strange power. It continues to draw visitors to its healing power in the two centuries since its construction in 1824.
This salt graduation tower pulls saltwater from the ground underneath to feed it to the spa resort in the center of town. As it pulls water out of the ground, it also distills the saltwater to other products, which are sold as health remedies. These remedies include table salt, mineral water, and salt mud. The towers which stand about 15.8 meters tall appear more as a giant wall to visitors as they continue on 1741.5 meters to the distance.
After purchasing a ticket, visitors may enter the Graduation Tower, climb the spiral staircase to the catwalk and watch the water trickle through small canals, collecting the precious mineral. Below the staircase, tourists and locals gather to watch a torrent of natural salt water flowing within the structure.
The location for this salt distillation tower and the medicinal salt baths that it feeds is due to the depth of the salt deposits deep underground which sit at a depth between 1,295 and 1,365 meters, are closer to the surface than in the surrounding areas.
