Da Nang Cathedral
This candy-pink cathedral of Da Nang is also known as the Chicken Church.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ho Chi Minh City is quite famous, attracting curious tourists with its vivid pinkness. Da Nang has its own pink church, also dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, just a little less known.
Designed by priest Louis Vallet and completed in 1924, Da Nang Cathedral is the only Catholic church in the city that dates back to the French colonial era. Its built-in solemn Gothic style, but its adorable, candy-pink façade softens the imposing impression.
While tourists, knowingly or not, refer to the cathedral simply as the “Pink Church,” the locals of Da Nang have another nickname for it: the Chicken Church. It comes from the metal weathercock that stands atop the building, representing the Gallic rooster as well as referencing the Biblical episode of St. Peter’s Denial, in which the crowing of a rooster plays a significant role.
