Ensign Peak

On July 26, 1847, Brigham Young climbed this hill to survey the Salt Lake Valley. He had set out after claiming that a vision from God directed him to lead his people into the valley, so the hill has religious significance for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On the day of his climb, Brigham Young remarked that the peak was a fitting place to “set up an ensign.”

The peak rises a little more than 1,000 feet above the valley floor, but it was high enough to survey the surrounding terrain and plan a future settlement. Today, the peak offers a scenic view of Salt Lake City.
