Help improve Atlas Obscura by expanding Essex Steam Train with additional information or photos.
This is one of the most scenic tourist lines in Connecticut. The ride along the historic Valley Railroad begins at the Essex Station and runs 12-miles throughout the valley. Several historical landmarks along the southern section of the river are viewable along the trip. The Goodspeed Opera House and Gillette Castle sit just across the river and are viewable from the train. Trains along the line also make a stop at the “Becky Thatcher” riverboat tour. Take a ride on the train during the fall to witness the trees transform into brilliant colors, offering amazing photo opportunities.
