Flies are heralded as the heroes of Girona, defender of the patron saint of Girona, Saint Narcís. During a French siege in 1286, soldiers ransacked the entire city, including the churches.

According to legends, the attacking forces tore open the tomb of Saint Narcís in the Church of St. Felix. It’s said a swarm of flies flew out from the tomb and attacked every French soldier in the city causing them to retreat.

One of the main local festivals surrounds Saint Narcissus Day on October 29, the Fires de Saint Narcís. This festival is full of music, stands with local fares and food, and is said to ward off the flies for the year.

Know Before You Go

There are many references to the flies located throughout the city. One of the best spots is right in front of the Basilica de Sant Feliu at the intersection of Carrer del Pou Rodó and Carrer de les Mosques. Head to the left when looking at the large stairs up to the basilica. There will be sculptures along the walls of the corner of these two streets.
