Friede sei mit Dir

This enormous piece of obscene artwork takes up five floors of a newspaper office building in Berlin, Germany. Its most prominent character is a man whose genitals stretch up the entire building.

The artwork is by a sculptor named Peter Lenk and was installed in 2009. It depicts real people who were used in controversial headlines by a neighboring paper called Bild. In fact, the figure with the extra long penis is meant to depict Bild’s former editor-in-chief, Kai Diekmann.

Despite its name (which translates to “peace be with you”), the artwork is fairly antagonistic. It pokes fun at a lawsuit Diekmann filed, in which he sued a journalist for writing a satirical article claiming he had undergone an experimental surgery that used pieces from a corpse to enlarge his undersized genitals. The court did not uphold Diekmann’s charges for invasion of privacy, libel, and defamation of character because of the nature of his position as the editor-in-chief of Bild.
