An unlikely connection between a little English town and the most famous brand of American motorcycles.
Harley Davidson Monument
William Harley was born in Littleport, England in May 1835. He left his hometown in 1859 for the United States and joined the Army. There, he fought on the side of the Union army in the American Civil War.
His son, William Sylvester Harley, was born in the U.S. in 1880 and went on to form the Harley Davidson Motor Company with Arthur Davidson in 1903.
This monument in Littleport was commissioned to celebrate the 100th birthday of the company in 2003 and is regularly visited by bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts from across the country.
Some relatives of the Harley family still live in the area.
