High Royds Hospital
Menston, England
Once a farm where patients tilled the soil, this asylum lost its workforce when overmedicating became common practice.
High Royds Hospital
High Royds Hospital, also known as West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum opened in 1888 on 300 acres, and was an unsettling abandoned place for many years.
Patients worked the farmland on the grounds, but eventually had to stop once medications were included in their treatments, since the medicines being used slowed them down and didn’t allow the patients to fulfill their duties. There were reports of patients being forcefully overdosed and given electroshock treatments.
The hospital has since been renovated, and portions of the structure used to create residential property.
