The Roadside Hotel That's Actually a Sculpture

Twenty meters high and unveiled in November 2007, this structure cost $1.2 million (AUD) to craft and was constructed of steel, concrete, and glass with solar panels that lit it up the building at night. The roadside sculpture is a large-scale model of a high-rise hotel.

From a distance, the structure could be mistaken for an actual hotel. However, it is positioned on a roadside with no surrounding structures. The hotel is effectively a giant folly.

Eight sculptures by recognized artists are distributed along the EastLink Bike Trail. Further sculptures can be seen along another section of the toll road making it effectively Australia’s largest sculpture park.

Know Before You Go

Tolls apply to driving on Eastlink. The sculpture can be seen from either lane whilst driving on the Eastlink tollway, located on the northbound carriageway between Thompson Rd and Greens Rd. Stopping on the tollway is not permitted.

The rear can be seen from the Dandenong Creek bike path with access off Freight Crt near Perry Road.
