James K. Polk Home and Museum
The former home of the 11th president of the United States.
James K. Polk lived in this home in the center of Columbia, Tennessee after graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1818 until he married Sarah Childress in 1824.
From here, the foundation for his political career began, from the Tennessee House of Representatives to governor, and finally president.
Despite serving only one term in the White House, Polk oversaw the largest territorial expansion in American history, acquired through a treaty with England, and directed the Mexican-American War.
Inside the home, visitors will see family artifacts, items from his time as president, as well as information on his day-to-day life while living at the residence.
Know Before You Go
Nestled close to downtown Columbia, there is ample parking to choose from, all free of charge. Next to the house is a gift shop and information center.
