Kristek's House

In a residential area full of ordinary family homes in Černá Pole, Brno, there is a hidden “Salvador Dalí-esque” gem near the tram line.

The first thing any viewer of the building will notice is the bright shades of purple that grace the facade, and a pair of huge hands jutting from the building holding a tree. The outside of the house features large paintings of a train and a melting clock. 

This surreal piece of architecture is the work of sculptor, painter, and performer Lubo Kristek. He transformed this house, not far from where he grew up, into a weird and oddly charming piece of art called “Sisyfiade or Boulder in Time”. It follows not only the Greek mythology, but also the work of French writer Albert Camus and playwright Jiří Voskovec.

Every so often for a few days out of the year, the house is open for guests to attend concerts or view the house’s collection of musical instruments that hang from the ceiling.
