Built by a wealthy local merchant around 1800, the cave holds an ancient sarcophagus. The exact origin of the sarcophagus is not entirely clear, but it assumed it was the final resting place of a wealthy seafarer from Phoenicia and is more than 2,000 years old.

Taking a stroll through the beautiful Christiansen Park and stumbling over this oddly out of place cave will leave visitors awed and pondering how the ancient relic made its way across Europe to its current location. No one knows exactly how the sarcophagus ended up in the coastal city of Flensburg.

Visiting the park is especially rewarding between March and mid-April when a sea of purple spring flowers is in full bloom.

Know Before You Go

The cave is located in the middle of Christiansen Park. Visitors should follow the foot path to the pond in the centre of the park. From there, stairs lead down to the entrance of the cave. The cave is easy to miss. If you have trouble locating it check the map by the upper entrance of the park.
