What is the significance of having a mosaic dedicated to various modes of transportation in a supermarket?

Santiago Padrós, a Spanish mosaic artist born in 1942, has become known for his intricate and colorful mosaics. Trained in Barcelona, he developed a distinctive style that combines traditional techniques with a modern sensibility. Padrós’ mosaics adorn public spaces, private homes, and religious buildings worldwide, demonstrating his mastery of the medium.

His art often explores themes of nature, spirituality, and cultural identity, reflecting his deep connection to Spanish heritage. Padrós’ contributions to contemporary mosaic art have earned him international recognition, with exhibitions in galleries and museums. With his innovative approach and dedication to craftsmanship, he continues to inspire emerging artists.

The mosaic is part of the residential complex popularly known as the Zodiac building, which was designed by José María Monravà López and Antoni Pujol Sevil in 1962. The first headquarters of the SEAT car dealership was established at this location in the city. The property is part of the catalog of cultural assets to be protected in Tarragona’s urban development plan.

This is a stroke of luck because when the dealership moved to another location and a new supermarket was due to open, the future of the mosaic was in jeopardy until it was agreed to leave it where it has always been, even if its significance has now been somewhat lost in the nearby food aisles.

Know Before You Go

You'll find the mosaic inside the Eurospar supermarket at 112 Rambla Nova in Tarragona.
