Esztergomi szénrakodó
An abandoned cable car station located on the Danube stands like a haunted house above the river.
This abandoned cable car station stands like a haunted ghost house high above the Danube River near Esztergom. It stands on two pillars in the water just a few meters from the shore.
The cable car station was utilized as the unloading station for the cable car system. The skip carts carried coal powder from the sorting station of the nearby Dorog coal mines. The coal powder was then loaded into barges on the river and carried to a power station on the island of Csepel in Budapest.
The cable car system was built in 1927 and operated until 1963 when coal mining operations stopped and the cables were dismantled. It was abandoned until 1994 when the property was handed over to an artistic foundation Váltótér Alapítvány, who wanted to make an artistic creative workplace inside the station. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the site has yet to be restored.
