The World’s Tallest Bin is the name given to this large structure which perplexes and attracts debate from both visitors and locals from Kalgoorlie.

The bin was first built in September 1980. It was designed as part of Kalgoorlie’s entry into the Tidy Towns competition, a state-wide event where local towns would roll out campaigns in the hope of being titled the best in the state for litter removal and general cleanliness. The self-proclaimed Keep Kalgoorlie Klean Kommittee were a group of locals who came up with the idea of building a large bin that would remind locals of the campaign to avoid littering and dispose of waste appropriately.

The 26-foot high bin was erected from an old water supply pipe and was painted with the help of local schoolchildren before handles were added. However, the bin never became a famous landmark and there have been local discussions about whether the bin should be destroyed but the quirky nature and interesting history still attract visitors to this day.
