Wildlife Mural
One of Edinburgh's most popular works of street art is located well off the beaten path.
Glasgow-based street artist Bobby McNamara, better known as Rogue Oner, is the master behind some of the most iconic works along the city’s Mural Trail. One of his few works in Edinburgh however, is this mural located on a set of shipping containers used by the Bridge 8 outdoor hub. It’s also away from the city’s tourism hub.
The mural depicts some of the wildlife native to Scotland, from red squirrels to hares, many of them can be seen moseying around the Union Canal not far from their portraits. While these types of murals are not uncommon, what makes the “Wildlife Mural” so notable is its popularity.
Located in the residential area of Sighthill, just a few miles southwest of the city’s tourism hubs, the “Wildlife Mural” is still well-known to locals. When listing the street art found across Edinburgh most often featured on social media, these containers will often outrank others located in the vicinity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old and New Town.
Bridge 8 itself is an outdoor activity organizer, known for their kayaking tours of the Union Canal. The containers are basically used as their storage units.
Know Before You Go
The mural is adjacent to the Union Canal towpath. It is just over 5 miles from the city center. You can ride a bike along the canal path using the National Cycle Route # 75.
