For almost 400 years, the Guranian people of Iran’s Qeshm Island have preserved the art of building Lenj boats—large, handmade, wood vessels for moving passengers or cargo. For generations, these ships have been built without blueprints or maps, save for the memories of the skilled builders. Once, almost all of the Guranian people worked in the business, but today the industry is at risk of disappearing. The few remaining builders are still hammering away to protect this intangible cultural heritage and art form for future generations.
