Did Hackers Just Leak a Complete Database of Turkey’s Citizens?
The 6.6 gigabyte file is said to contain nearly 50 million names and identifying numbers.
A hacker or group of hackers has claimed to have leaked a list of nearly 50 million people and identifying numbers, which they say is a Turkish “citizenship database.”
The leak, which is 6.6 gigabytes, allegedly contains a trove of personal information about Turkish residents, including each person’s Turkish identification number, first and last name, mother and father’s first name, gender, city and date of birth, and full address.
The leak also revealed the same information about Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and was apparently politically motivated. The website, which went online Monday, contained some hacker trash talk as well as criticism of Erdoğan and Donald Trump.
“Index your database. We had to fix your sloppy DB work,” the site reads. “Do something about Erdogan! He is destroying your country beyond recognition.”
“Lessons for the US?” it continued. “We really shouldn’t elect Trump, that guy sounds like he knows even less about running a country than Erdogan does.”
There was some reason to be skeptical of the alleged hack, though most commentators said the information itself appears real. The data, for one thing, contains around 25 million fewer names than the Turkish population, which is around 75 million. In addition, some said that the data had been leaked before.
