Eviction Block Party for Outsider Art Icon the Broken Angel

The Broken Angel, an intricate outsider art house in Brooklyn, is having one last hurrah. Its owner and creator Arthur Wood, who purchased the Clinton Hill building 30 years ago and gradually transformed it through mosaics, angular towers, and other art embedded into its bricks, has been given his last eviction notice and on March 15 he will be locking its red door forever. [UPDATE: Eviction has been postponed until March 31.]

To celebrate the New York City icon of artistic ambition, and raise funds for Wood’s legal fees and new home, a block party at the Broken Angel followed by a gathering at the Irondale Center is being held today. (If you can’t attend, you can also donate online.) The block party is 4 to 8 pm and the Irondale Center festivities go until late. It’s one last chance to revel with the warped building, and give it a proper send off into outsider art history. Click here for up-to-date details on the block party.
